Ulla Unzeitig

Ulla Unzeitig, born in 1975, studied architecture in Vienna and Stockholm.

Since 1995, she has been publishing in professional journals on topics such as architecture, building physics, ecology, and social change.

Since 2018, she has been writing more fiction, mostly climate fiction or coming-of-age stories.

She heads an innovation lab for climate-neutral renovation in Vienna.

I am involved with Climate Fiction Writers Europe because, as the director of an Innovation Lab for Climate-Neutral Renovation, I want to bridge the gap between fiction and nonfiction.

The Monkeys of the North Pole (Die Affen vom Nordpol)

The climate fiction novel “The Monkeys of the North Pole” tells the story of 16-year-old Rupert, who, after his mother’s death, struggles to fit into the island community of the last remaining humans.

Resources are scarce, his father offers him no support, and Rupert feels like an outsider. Everything changes when he befriends the monkeys on the other side of the island. Will they, as a group, be able to reshape the island community?

A thought-provoking all-ages book about scarce resources, racism, decolonization, and the circular economy.
