Thomas Thiemeyer

Thomas Thiemeyer, born in 1963, studied geology and geography before establishing himself as a freelancer and embarking on a career as an illustrator, and later as an author. With his award-winning science thrillers and series of young adult novels – which have won numerous prizes, sold over half a million copies and been translated into thirteen languages – he has now become a leading figure in German popular fiction. The author lives with his family in Stuttgart.

I am involved with Climate Fiction Writers Europe because I believe that the way we behave today has a direct impact on our children’s lives, and because I am convinced that we can introduce them to this complex subject in an exciting and entertaining way.

Evolution (1) – Die Stadt der Überlebenden (Evolution Pt. 1 – City of Survivors)

Evolution is unstoppable.
Evolution is inevitable.
It spares no one.
Not even us.

An exchange group on their way to the USA, an emergency landing at Denver Airport. When Jem and Lucie leave the aeroplane, the world is suddenly no longer as it was: the tarmac is overgrown, the terminal is deserted, and danger lurks everywhere. Animals, in particular, are out to get the new arrivals. What has happened? In their search for answers, they learn of a few remaining survivors in a lost city. But how are they to reach them when the whole world seems to have conspired against them?

Through the gaps in the clouds, she could make out trees, meadows and bodies of water. The land beneath them looked beautiful. Peaceful, tranquil and green. Damn, it was green. The sun had already sunk behind the mountains and the sky was ablaze with orange and red. Suddenly, a few skyscrapers appeared, their upper halves spectacularly illuminated by the last light of the evening. Lucie felt a tingling sensation at the nape of her neck. Something wasn’t right. It was as if she were looking at a picture that held a hidden secret. Downright hypnotic. Suddenly she knew what it was. She leaned forward a little further. “That’s …,” she murmured. “Can you see that too?” “What do you mean?” Lucie pointed outwards. “Don’t you notice anything? There isn’t a single light on down there.”

With their last ounce of strength, Lucie and her friends reach the city of survivors. Whilst Jem fights off attacking animals at the gates, Lucie hopes to finally find answers inside. But in the shadow of the towers, the Middle Ages seem to have been revived: Science is regarded as black magic, and asking questions is strictly forbidden. When the teenagers discover from forbidden books that they are not the first time-travellers, the lord of the castle’s wrath is unleashed. The friends have no choice but to flee. Their destination: the only place that still offers hope – the Oasis of the Time-Jumpers. But the path there leads through dangerous swamps, right into the land of the Squids.

Finally at our destination! After a gruelling escape through swamps and deserts, Jem wakes up in the Time Jumpers’ oasis. But how did he get here, and where are his friends? Katta has disappeared, and Lucie and little Squid are in a coma.

When their leader GAIA takes him under her wing, hope springs up in Jem: hope of returning home, of a new life. But then Lucie wakes up and the friends realise what a treacherous game they have been drawn into. A game that threatens the future of the Earth.

In a final battle, the young people must decide: are they on the side of the animals or of humanity?

Project Stormwitch

Welcome to the Tornado Alley.
The race against time begins.

Ever since his parents were killed in a tornado, thirteen-year-old Finn has been obsessed with understanding these storms – and preventing them. Together, he and his best friend Billy have therefore developed their own early-warning system: Stormwitch.

However, their tests are repeatedly disrupted by the ruthless storm chaser Colonel Remington, who sabotages anyone who gets in his way.

But the two of them continue to work tirelessly on Stormwitch until the system finally sounds the alarm: a supercell that could become the storm of the century is approaching – and no other monitoring station is detecting the danger!
